NOTICE: Solid Fuel Regulations

Location
County-wide

Effective from 31st October 2022, new regulations were introduced to improve air quality and public health by banning the sale of bituminous (smoky) coal, wet wood, and turf (with limited exceptions). These fuels are known for their high smoke emissions, which are linked to poor health outcomes.

For more information, visit the government’s dedicated website: www.gov.ie/cleanair.

Key Regulations:

Biomass Fuel Products: Wood products and logs sold in units under 2m³ must have a moisture content of less than 25%.

Turf Sales: Turf cannot be sold via retail, online, or other media outlets, in public houses, or other public places. However, individuals with turbary rights may continue to cut turf for personal use and can gift turf to others. If you currently obtain turf from family, friends, or neighbours, this can continue.

Low Smoke Coal and Smokeless Fuel:

All fuel marketed as “low smoke” or “smokelesscoal must be sold in sealed bags (10kg, 20kg or 40kg) labelled with the following:

APPROVED FUEL - Contents comply with the Air Pollution Act Regulations”.

Reporting Violations:

If you suspect that smoky coal is being sold illegally in your area, please contact the Environment Section of Meath County Council:
