This accreditation is similar to the Blue Flag for beaches and aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 5pm and 5am.
The campaign for the flag was supported by Meath County Council and County Meath Chamber and it succeeded after an 11 month campaign.
Navan will be taking part in the official annual celebration of the Purple Flag programme by hosting a fun packed Halloween Festival weekend featuring a torch lit parade. The festival will kick off on Friday, October 25th.
Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. Purple Flag towns and cities benefit from more visitors, lower crime and anti-social behaviour, and improved perceptions of centres. Towns that have been accredited with Purple Flag status have seen huge increases in footfall with figures confirmed of 6.4%.
The scheme is managed by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) working alongside the Purple Flag Advisory Committee Purple Flag. There now are 28 towns and cities across Ireland who are proudly flying the Purple Flag after working hard to gain accreditation.
Representatives from Meath County Council and County Meath Chamber will be presented with the accreditation certificate and flag at the PF Awards night taking place in Melton Mowbray on Thursday, November 14th.
