In Conversation with Seamus O'Rourke

Thursday, 22nd May at 7.00 pm

Meet Seamus O'Rourke, award-winning writer, director and actor from Co. Leitrim as he discusses his latest book with former Meath writer-in-residence Nicola Cassidy.

The book "Leaning On Gates", is a sequel to his popular first memoir "Standing in Gaps". It chronicles his adolescence in rural Leitrim in his signature deadpan style. The book sees how Seamus finally flees the nest, briefly sampling life in New York, Dublin and London – before inevitably returning to his beloved, duller than dishwater existence at home – a life which now includes alcohol, Doctor Hook and some low-budget romance.

Praised as 'the funniest thing I have read in ages' on RTÉ's Countrywide and 'a wonderful memoir' by Joe Duffy.

About the Author

Seamus O’Rourke is an actor, a poet, a playwright and a proud Leitrim man. He has written fifteen stage plays and one whole book of poems, recitations and good ones. He’s always on the radio. Based in rural Ireland, he has become widely known for his simple storytelling – capturing rural Irish life in a way that both amuses and affects. His writing takes a rare approach – he watches from a different hill – it oozes with an energy and passion that comes from being in the wrong place at the right time. The only time you can get all the details is when there’s nothing happening. That’s when you find out everything.

About the host

Nicola Cassidy, from county Louth, is an author and screenwriter, who has published four historical fiction novels. She was named Meath writer-in-residence for 2020.
