From Grangegorman to Van Diemen's Land : A Talk by Dr Bláthnaid Nolan
Dunshaughlin & District Historical Society presents this talk by Dr. Bláthnaid Nolan on the transportation of Irish women and children to Van Diemen's land.
The Grangegorman Depot, the first exclusively female prison in Ireland or Britain, opened in 1836. The Depot's dark past saw women awaiting transportation to spend their final days in Ireland. Between 1844 and 1853, sixteen convict ships transported just over 3000 Irish women to Hobart in Tasmania.
But who were these women and what was life for them like in this prison colony?
Dr Bláthnaid Nolan, is a lecturer in 19th century Irish History, PhD in UCD Women's Studies, telling the story of the women convicts of Grangegorman.
