Captivity - A Sideshow Story: Incarceration of Aliens and Residents in Meath and Tipperary during the First World War
Sunday 7th October at 3.00pm.

During the First World War Ireland housed three groups of captives.

The first group consisted of those who were interned or imprisoned as a result of nationalist activity associated with the Easter Rising.

The other two groups had their freedoms curtailed as a result of the war. As with other counts of Irish history of the period the nationalist prisoners are remembered while those imprisoned because of the war are overlooked.

This is a story of the state’s incarceration of military and civilian prisoners in Oldcastle workhouse and Templemore Barracks and attitudes to those detained.
