The Boyne Greenway Ground Investigation NIS Public Consultation
In furthering the development of the proposed Boyne Greenway, Meath County Council are seeking to undertake proposed Ground Investigation Works at several locations along the extents of the proposed route. The Council have determined that an Appropriate Assessment is required in respect of the proposed Ground Investigation Works. Pursuant to Regulation 42(13) of the European Communities (Birds and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011 (S.I. No. 477 of 2011) as amended (S.I. No. 293/2021), the Council are undertaking a public consultation period, the particulars or which are stated below.
Location
Ground Investigation Works are proposed along the 26.4km Boyne Greenway scheme. The starting point of the proposed route is at Andy Brennan Park in Navan town. The proposed route extends eastward along the banks of the River Boyne, passing Slane Castle, Slane village, Brú na Bóinne, and terminates at the main gates of the Oldbridge Estate.
Nature and Extent
The proposed Ground Investigation Works will consist of fieldwork followed by laboratory testing and factual reporting. The fieldwork will include intrusive Ground Investigation works (boreholes, trial pits, dynamic probes, window samples, slit trenches, foundation pits) and non-intrusive geophysical surveying.
Possible Decisions
The possible decisions that the Natura Impact Statement (NIS) may conclude are that Meath County Council, as the competent authority in this case, may determine that the proposed Ground Investigation Works, either individually or in combination with other plans or projects, will either:
- not result in likely significant effects to the integrity of any Natura 2000 site.
- result in likely significant effects to the integrity of any Natura 2000 site.
Draft Decision
It is the conclusion of the authors of the Natura Impact Statement (NIS) that Meath County Council, as the competent authority in this case, may determine that the proposed Ground Investigation Works, either individually or in combination with other plans or projects, will not adversely affect the integrity of any Natura 2000 site, provided that the mitigation prescribed in this NIS is fully and properly implemented.

The Natura Impact Statement and a map of the proposed project may also be purchased at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of such making available. Requests to purchase hard copies may be made to the above email and postal addresses.
A person may make submissions or observations to the public authority within 30 days from the date of the notice. The public may make submissions or observations in writing to either of the above addresses, or online at http://consult.meath.ie concerning the proposed project to Meath County Council.
Meath County Council shall have regard to any submissions or observations received from the public. Personal data contained in submissions or observations will be processed in accordance with Meath County Council’s Data Protection Notice which is available on www.meath.ie.
