Citizenship and Eligibility to Vote

Eligibility to Vote/Cáilitheacht chun Votála

A person:

  • must be at least 18 years of age on the day the Register comes into force (i.e.15th February of each year)
  • must be resident at the address at which you wish to be registered on 1st September
  • may be registered at one address only.
  • Ní mór do dhuine a bheith 18 mbliana d'aois ar a laghad an lá a thagann an clár i bhfeidhm (15 Feabhra)
  • Ní mór gnáthchónaí a bheith ag an seoladh dar mian leis/leía bheith cláraithe ar an 1 Meán Fómhair
  • Ní mór do dhuine a bheith cláraithe ag seoladh amháin.

Persons wishing to have their names added to/amended or deleted from the voting register must complete form RFA or RFA1.

Citizenship/Saoránacht

 

Every adult resident in the state is entitled to be registered, their citizenship determines the type of elections they may vote in (see below)

Referenda: Only Irish citizens can vote in referenda e.g. to vote for or against a proposal to modify the Irish constitution (Bunreacht na hÉireann).

Presidential: Only Irish citizens can vote in Presidential Elections.

Elections for Dáil Éireann: Both Irish and British citizens can vote in elections for Dáil Éireann (the lower house of parliament).

Elections for the European Parliament: Irish, British and other European Union (EU) citizens can vote in elections for the European Parliament.

Elections for Local Government: Irish, British, EU and non-EU citizens can vote in local elections.

Reifrinn: Ní féidir ach le saoránaigh Éireannacha vóta a chaitheamh i reifreann m.sh. vóta a chaitheamh ar son nó in aghaidh an mholta go ndéanfaí athrú ar Bhunreacht na hÉireann.

Toghcháin Uachtaránachta: Ní féidir ach le saoránaigh Éireannacha vóta a chaitheamh i dtoghcháin uachtaránachta.

Toghcháin Dháil Éireann: Is féidir le saoránaigh Éireannacha agus Bhriotanacha araon vóta a chaitheamh i dtoghcháin Dháil Éireann (teach íochtarach na parlaiminte).

Toghcháin Pharlaimint na hEorpa: Is féidir le saoránaigh Éireannacha, Bhriotanacha agus thíortha eile an Aontais Eorpaigh (AE) vóta a chaitheamh i dtoghcháin Pharlaimint na hEorpa.

Toghcháin Rialtais Áitiúil: Is féidir le saoránaigh Éireannacha, Bhriotanacha agus thíortha eile an AE vóta a chaitheamh i dtoghcháin áitiúla chomh maith le daoine nach saoránaigh de chuid an AE iad. 

 

Application for the Supplement to the Register of Electors for electors who have become an Irish Citizen

A person may apply for entry in the supplement to the register of electors as an Irish citizen if their citizenship has changed after 1 September by completing Form RFA5 (pdf, 93kb) or by contacting the Register of Electors Section.
